Monica Stevenson is a commercial and fine art photographer who incorporates a rich cosmopolitan visual language into her imagery – drawn from her time living in Australia, Spain, and Puerto Rico before setting up shop in New York City.
More than twenty years experience in the field, and a desire to remain artistically innovative in the swiftly changing industry, is apparent in Stevenson’s photographs of jewelry, cosmetics, luxury products, and splashes. This approach extends to all media including her new ventures in video. Her clients include Tiffany and Co., Cartier, Sotheby’s, Gillette, Movado, Vogue, Crabtree and Evelyn, and Volkswagen.
Her “Purple Shoe Splash” was recently awarded at the 2010 APA|NY Photo Contest and nominated for the 4th Annual Photography Masters Cup in London. In 2004, her iconic “Hermes Scarf” horse image won a place in the Advertising Photographers of America “Wraparound – The Year in Vision”.
Stevenson’s fine art photography focuses on a subject increasingly integral to her life: horses. Stevenson’s haunting black-and-white equine photographs gracefully capture horses in all of their disciplines, highlighting their relationship with their human companions and the environment. Her images are rich in feeling and texture, reflecting the enduring romance of equestrian tradition. This series of images – shot with a vintage Rolleiflex camera and printed in a warm sepia tone – evokes an era of the hand-crafted image. It is an art that reflects the historic bond between horse, man and nature.
Stevenson’s fascination with the equestrian culture has taken her on journeys around the world. Her series includes images of snow polo in St. Moritz, summer polo in Montreal and Argentina, hunter/jumpers from California, rejoneadores from Mexico, wild horses in France, and Arabians in the UAE.
Both Stevenson’s commercial and fine art images reflect her singular vision and creativity. Her passionate and elegant photographs have already caused quite a stir in equine circles worldwide, with the series being exhibited in galleries such as the Mercedes Benz Gallery in NYC and the Katona Museum of Art, and as part of the permanent collection in the Focus Gallery, London. She spent several weeks in the summer of 2010 documenting the Arabian race horse for H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi.
