DEADLINE EXTENDED!!: A Call for Entries!: APA-NY’s 3rd Annual Juried Exhibition & Competition

Wed 31st Jul, 2024 – Mon 30th Sep, 2024

Posted by APA New York

The deadline for entering our annual competition/exhibition has been extended until September 22. Lucky you! But please don't delay; it will not be extended again. Enter today!

APA's New York chapter invites everyone to participate in our 3rd Annual Juried Photography Competition and Exhibition at the renowned Soho Photo Gallery. Soho Photo Gallery was founded in 1971 by a group of New York Times photojournalists and avant-garde photographers, as a co-op gallery, which it remains to this day. It is New York City’s longest-running co-op gallery.

• This one-week, open-gallery event, to be held December 3-8, 2024, will give each photographic artist a chance to promote their work to New York’s top art buyers and editors, as well as the public.

• What kinds of work should you submit? All kinds! You can submit personal work or assignment work; commercial or fine art; reportage, fashion, street photography, still life, landscape, macro or portraits; fantasy or reality; digital or old-school alternative processes; color or black & white; animal, vegetable or mineral; you name it (including any photographic genre we forgot to mention), and if it’s your best work, we want to see it, whatever it is! Everyone in the pool!

• There are two categories: Single Image Entries and Series Entries (definitions of these below).

• Work from APA members will be featured on the gallery walls at this special event, juried by famed gallerist Michael Foley. The promotional effort for this event will include: Features on the APA website, a social media and PR campaign, a fully illustrated show catalogue, and a Gala Opening Reception to bring the industry professionals who buy photographs and hire photographers to see the exhibit. You might even win one of the fabulous prizes!

About the competition Juror: Michael Foley

He joined Leica in 2023 as the Gallery Director of the New York Meatpacking Store & Gallery. Foley lives in Manhattan with his wife, Maya, and son, Jack.

APA-NY’s Competition Submission Guidelines:

• Only digital images are accepted through our online submission process. *The original image does not need to be digital in origin, it must only be submitted in digital form for our purposes.

•Image files must be named by you, but once submitted will be assigned an arbitrary ID for the “blind” judging.

•A single image entry is one image. You may submit multiple single images at the same time, but each is considered to be a single entry.
Note: A series is defined as up to 5 images that are part of the same story or body of work.

•While there is no limit to the number of single entries submitted, we recommend uploading no more than 10 images at a time (Check out before submitting additional images).

•You may not enter an image that has won any APA competition in the past year.

•There is no restriction on when the entry image was created.

•The juror/curator for this competition may select all or part of a Series Entry.

•You need to be an APA member to enter the contest. If you are not yet an APA member, you can join at the link below, and we will send you a discount code to enter this competition.

•Anyone claiming APA membership must be current in their dues at time of entry and when winners are announced.

•You may not change your name after you enter the competition, nor add a collaborator’s name to your byline. The name you enter under will need to be the name you use as an APA member.

•This competition cannot accept any submission created in whole or in part using AI technology.

•All decisions of the juror/curator are final.

Upload Guidelines:

•All files must be jpegs with a file size limit of 2MB.

•Simple file naming conventions: please do not use special characters like ©, @, #, é, ü

Please caption each of your submitted image files as such:

•For Single Image Entries: Your Last Name, Your First Name, Image Title.
Example Caption:  Jones.Jane.Red Window

•For Series Entries: Your Last Name, Your First Name, Image Title, Image x of y.
Example Caption: Jones.Jane.Ballerina.Image 1 of 5

•Please do NOT use any other numbers on your caption(s). Please do not watermark your images with your name. That will interfere with jurying.

•You distinguish a series entry from a multiple single image entry by the ‘Image 1 of 5’ captioning.

•Image size is no smaller than 1200 pixels on the long side and, at most, 1800 pixels.

•Please prep your image for placement on the web (this will convert your image to the sRGB color space at 72ppi).
Images should not have visible identifying text/symbols; entries are assigned an arbitrary ID for “blind” judging.

•PLEASE NOTE: The submission platform says single image entries only. However, by captioning your image files correctly, your images will stay together to be considered as a series.

•••AND ANOTHER NOTE: When you are entering your submission on our National APA competition page, you will see open competitions for our San Diego and San Francisco chapters there as well. Make sure you enter your images into the correct one! You can enter any of them if you like, but our NY chaper competition is the only one that will be part of our week-long exhibition at Soho Photo Gallery.

You don't need to be an APA member to enter, however, APA members nation-wide get a deep discount on entry fees.  If you are not a member of APA and would like to join, please visit our website for more information here:  https://apanational.org/join/    We have five different levels of membership (starting at just $50), so there is bound to be one just right for your needs.

If Your Work is Chosen for the Show:
• Your work will be juried from the digital files you submit.

• You may enter as many single images, or as many series, as you like.

• Images must be original and may not have won another APA competition in the last year (since August 2023).

• No AI generated images permitted.

• By submitting your work for jurying, you commit to exhibiting whichever image(s) the juror chooses. The decision of the juror, as to which photographs go in the show, is final.

• If chosen, your photographs must be suitably prepared for gallery presentation (matted, framed, and wired for hanging, etc), and brought to the gallery by drop-off day.

•If you do not have a printer, we have one we can recommend who does excellent, affordable printing and matting.

• Only work that arrives at the gallery properly framed and wired for hanging by the December 1 drop-off deadline will be hung in the show. The maximum height or width (including frame) of exhibited work cannot exceed 48 inches. It is preferred for large framed pieces to use Plexi rather than glass. Delivery instructions will be emailed to accepted participants. Printing, mounting, and framing of each piece must be gallery quality. Work must be wired for hanging (no sawtooth hangers).

• APA New York reserves the right to publish the winning photographs on our website and social media to publicize the show, and in a printed catalogue. The Copyright is always retained by the photographer.

• If your work is juried in to the show, you will need to provide us with a High Rez version for printing in the catalogue.

• At the conclusion of the show, any work must be picked up from the gallery by either the photographer or a designated representative. Any work not picked up within 5 business days will be considered property of APA and/or the gallery. If you live outside the New York metro area, your work can be shipped back to you, but ONLY if you have arranged in advance, and your work arrives in reusable packaging with a pre-paid mailer. Neither APA nor the gallery are responsible for any damage that occurs in transit.

Commission and Insurance:
• The winning images will be featured at the Soho Photo Gallery in December. You have the option of making them available for sale.

• You can price your work at whatever amount you like. There will be no commission on the sale of any prints. The purchase will go through you directly. Prints that are sold must be picked up at the conclusion of the show.

• Although we will make reasonable efforts to protect your work while it is in our possession, we are not legally responsible for it. Consider insuring your work for the time it is in the gallery and for the shipping.
